Background
Clarins has unveiled the AI Skin Observer, a new in-store technology designed to improve skin diagnosis by combining artificial intelligence with expert human advice. The launch marks a major step in the brand’s ongoing focus on customer-centric innovation and Beauty Tech.
The AI Skin Observer is currently being introduced in 20 Clarins locations worldwide. These encompass high-end and flagship retail locations, including John Lewis on Oxford Street in London, Printemps Haussmann in Paris, Clarins’ boutique at Dubai Hills, La Rinascente in Milan, a boutique and spa at Shanghai’s Jing An Kerry Center, and Macy’s at Herald Square in New York. Clarins has also made a simplified web version available online in several markets, including the United States.
The device works as a smart mirror integrated into existing consultation tables in Clarins stores. Using biophysical sensors and facial images captured under multiple lighting conditions, the AI Skin Observer can assess up to 22 different skin parameters. This lets beauty advisors study the skin more closely, including details that the naked eye cannot see.
Clarins said the tool is designed to support, not replace, human expertise. By automating skin analysis, the device helps beauty consultants focus more on listening to customers and understanding their needs, while AI refines and enriches the advice offered during consultations.
The AI Skin Observer is the latest outcome of Clarins’ long-term research into skin science and digital innovation. Developed with support from a network of start-ups, the technology builds on years of laboratory research and advances in imaging and artificial intelligence led by the group’s Beauty Tech division.
The launch follows earlier Beauty Tech initiatives from Clarins, including the Lip Oil Factory for on-demand product customization and the MyBlend LED mask. Company executives said early feedback from beauty advisors and customers has been positive, reinforcing Clarins’ strategy of blending science, technology, and human touch in modern beauty retail.
