Background
UCLA Aurum Cosmetics strives to educate students on careers in the cosmetic industry. The club brings the students together via networking events, seminars and brand activities. It was established in 2022. The group is comprised of students who love beauty and those aspiring to make a career in the industry.
The club is looking to have approximately 50-60 members and is looking to meet once a week. It provides exposure to various career paths, from product formulation and science to marketing and business. Aurum has collaborated with leading beauty brands like L’Oréal and e.l.f. and hosted guest presentations, brand events and networking opportunities.
Over 15 beauty professionals came to campus during the Spring into Beauty event at the organisation. The event gave the students the opportunity to interact directly with the industry experts and get an idea about various career opportunities.
In addition, Aurum has set up a tour of L’Oréal’s West Coast headquarters, a Black Voices in Beauty panel and an Ulta Beauty scavenger hunt. Members can take part in formulation workshops where they create products such as custom lip glosses.
The club has expanded significantly, with the number of members tripling since some of the current members joined the club some time ago. Its leaders also want to make it more inclusive, having people from different cultures, academic backgrounds and career interests.
Beauty offers opportunities wider than traditional professions, and can attract students from fields such as chemical engineering, Nicole Guan, the incoming president, said. Other members have linked up their passion for science, business and personal care with possible careers in the cosmetics field.
Another issue that the club intends to tackle is the effect of social media and beauty standards on people’s mental well-being. They wish to bring to the students the beauty as an art form through to a profession.
