Background-

A tanning salon in Scunthorpe has grown into a training academy, supporting hundreds of aspiring beauticians in launching their own businesses.

Louise Mineham’s journey began 14 years ago when she opened Tantini tanning salon on Ashby High Street, a business that has since grown into a well-recognised name in the area.

She then launched Tantini Academy and Training, which has since trained hundreds of aspiring beauticians and aesthetics specialists.

Alongside advanced beauty and body contouring techniques, students also gain skills in business management and social media confidence as part of their training.

Mineham operates the academy alongside her daughters, Mollie, 23, and Lily, 21. The business became a Community Interest Company last year, helping it reach a wider group of learners.

According to Mineham, the training programme grew out of a noticeable shortage of trainers in the Scunthorpe area. She said she takes real satisfaction in watching former students return to visit or rent space within the salon after completing their courses.

Several graduates go on to take further courses, build up savings, and eventually start their own beauty businesses. Some have set up shop in Manchester, Sheffield, Doncaster, and closer to home in Scunthorpe.

The academy has now been running for a decade, with Mineham’s daughters stepping into educator roles after joining the business as teenagers.

Mineham pointed to support from generous funders, along with the family’s own financial investment, as key to the academy’s growth. She added that the team regularly updates its training in areas such as health and safety and mental health awareness.

Looking back on her upbringing on a council estate, Mineham said the family’s hard work and determination brought them to where they stand today, and they hope their story motivates young people to seek out opportunities and shape better futures for themselves.
